HISTORY


Ø Department of Chemistry started in the year 1956 for PUC course with eight students.
Ø The Department of chemistry expanded its horizons in 1958 with stalwart’s Mrs.G.Savithri, Mrs.B.B.Sulochana, Dr.A.V.Subayamma, Dr.Jameelunisa begum and Dr.G.Jyothi as Head’s of the Department.
Ø In the year 1978 UGC sanctioned the chemistry department a major research project (Inter disciplinary) and the title of the project is “The study and analysis of various aspects of water with respect to portability”. Minor research project is also sanctioned with title “Adulteration of food references to oils”, as department project 
Ø In the year 1985 Chemistry was started as subject for restructured Nutrition & Dietetics for B.Sc students.
Ø In the year 1989 the Medical LAB Technology course was introduced with chemistry as one of the subject of Intermediate course.
Ø In 1998 chemistry was introduced as a subject along with Micro-Biology and Nutrition and Dietetics.
Ø The UGC also sanctioned the chemistry department minor research projects and titles of the projects are “Chemical modeling studies on the interaction of Aroyl hydrazines and amino acids with divalent Transition metal ions” to Dr.G.Jyothi in the year 1997-99, “Assay of anti viral drugs” to Dr.Jameelunisa Begum and “Chemical speciation studies in solution” to Dr.V.Nagalakshmi in the year2005-2007.
Ø In the year 2000 chemistry course along with Microbiology, Biochemistry was offered.
Ø In the year 2006 Biochemistry, Biotechnology along with Chemistry was started.

Uniqueness:

ü The Department has unique features of being the only department with Research Centre.
ü The Department with 4 staff members with Ph.D. as the highest qualification and two members are doing their Ph.D under UGC FDP XII Plan.
ü 7 members with M.Phil degrees.
ü Equipped with sophisticated and latest equipment like HPLC, digital PH meters, Conductivity meters, Potentiometers, Spectrophotometers and Colorimeters,flame photometer, nephelo turbidity meter,Digital Photofluorometer etc.
ü Largest no.of publications 40 in International Journals 15 in National Journals.

ü Largest no.of research articles in International, National and State level seminars 20 in number.
